Col Doug Applegate (Ret) will join us to talk about his efforts to #Flipthe49th. In 2016, he captured 49.7% of the vote to be narrowly defeated by Darrell Issa. Matt Strabone We will be introduced to this Democrat who is a candidate for Assessor-Recorder-Clerk for San Diego County. Matt Strabone is a nonprofit attorney who owns his own law practice here in San Diego. Matt helps charities and other nonprofits solve their most difficult operational and legal challenges, allowing them to spend more time focusing on their mission. His clients have included nationwide nonprofits dedicated to women’s health and local charities committed to assisting our veterans. One particular highlight of Matt’s career has been providing legal counsel to President Barack Obama. San Diego Port Commission Vice Chairman Rafael Castellanos will speak to the club about the Port’s 2013 climate action plan implementation and accomplishments, as well as the Port’s efforts to advance the progressive principle of environmental justice.
Rafael Castellanos is a member of the Board of Port Commissioners of the Unified Port of San Diego, currently serving as its Vice Chairman. Rafael is also the chair of the Port’s Environmental Advisory Committee. He is a partner with the law firm Solomon Minton Cardinal Doyle & Smith LLP, where he specializes in commercial transactional law. His professional affiliations include service on the Board of Directors of MANA de San Diego, the San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association, and the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation. Rafael is a member of the California State Bar Association, the San Diego County Bar Association, the Mexican American Business and Professional Association, and the San Diego Foundation’s Business Forum on Climate Change. Rafael graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and he earned a Juris Doctorate from the University of Chicago Law School as a Cornerstone Scholar.
We will also hear from Jordan Beane, PBDC member and candidate for our own District 2 of the San Diego City Council.

This month we will have the honor of welcoming Professor and Author Stephen J. Natoli to joins us at the February General Membership Meeting.
He will speak to us about his new book “Liberally Speaking: Why Liberalism is Right for America.” and what it mean to be a liberal in today’s america.
If you’re fired up about whats going on with the Nation and want to do something about it, we are gearing up a multi-pronged set of action items throughout the year. Join us and help us with your ideas, vision and hard work. We will need it.
