Just Announced: Democratic Candidate Forum for San Diego City Council, District 2

We will be hosting a forum with the announced Democratic candidates for the San Diego City Council District 2.

We need your help!
Please submit proposed questions you want to ask some or all of the candidates at the forum. All questions must be submitted by January 4th, 2018 to be considered for the forum. Please email your questions or deliver questions to one of our PBDC board members or better yet, bring them to the regular club meeting on January 4th. 

A vote to endorse in the race will follow the forum. While this event is open to the public, attendees to the forum must RSVP  in advance as space is limited.  Only Pacific Beach Democratic Club members in good standing on January 18 can vote for the endorsement.

It’s Fall and time for the October meeting: Join us to Learn about the latest border issues and Get Out the Vote programs

We hope to see you at the October Pacific Beach Democratic Club (PBDC) Meeting. The club meets the first Thursday of every month and this month our special guest speakers are David A. Shirk and Howard Wayne:

David A. Shirk, professor and director of the Master of Arts in International Relations program in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at the University of San Diego. He will be discussing the latest issues affecting U.S.-Mexico relations and the border.

Howard Wayne, deputy state attorney general, adjunct professor of law at University of San Diego, and former state assemblyman (1996-2002) representing the 78th district. He will be discussing the County party’s Get-Out-The-Vote (GOTV) efforts.

 

As we do at each meeting, any candidate for local races can speak for 2 minutes so you will hear from a variety of candidates. Newcomers are always welcome! Members are encouraged to bring a Fall Treat or snack to share.

 

David A. Shirk is professor and director of the Master of Arts in International Relations program in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at the University of San Diego. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California-San Diego, and conducts research on Mexican politics, U.S.-Mexican relations, and law enforcement and security along the U.S.-Mexican border. Dr. Shirk also teaches introductory courses on politics, and upper division courses on comparative politics, international political economy and security. He is also the director of “Justice in Mexico,” a research and policy initiative on criminal justice and the rule of law in Mexico with over $6 million in support from the Hewlett, MacArthur, and Tinker Foundations, the U.S. Agency for International Development and the U.S. State Department. He has served as a consultant for the World Bank and various other international agencies. He has been a Resident Fellow and a Global Fellow at the Mexico Institute of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (2009-10; 2013-15), and a fellow at the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies (1998-99; 2001-03). From 2003 to 2013, he was director of the Trans-Border Institute at the University of San Diego. Dr. Shirk has delivered testimony to both houses of the U.S. Congress, as well as numerous presentations to academic, military, law enforcement, and policy audiences. He has been an author and editor for several books.

Howard Wayne has been a leader for decades in the local Democratic party. Wayne is a former state assemblyman (1996-2002) representing the 78th district. He also was a member of the San Diego County Democratic Party Central Committee. Wayne served as Central Area Vice Chair for the Democratic Party He currently serves as a deputy attorney general with the State of California. He was an adjunct professor of law at University of San Diego School of Law. He is a founder of the San Diego Lawyers Chapter of the American Constitution Society for Law and Policy. Wayne also founded the Latino Jewish Coalition. He will discuss the county’s Get-Out-The-Vote (GOTV) program.

Be sure and join us for the September Pacific Beach Democratic Club (PBDC) Meeting. The club meets the first Thursday of every month and this month our special guest speaker is Lori Saldaña, candidate for San Diego County Board of Supervisors. As we do at each meeting, any candidate for local races can speak for 2 minutes so you will hear from a variety of candidates. Also, with 2018 elections coming up quickly, we will be discussing political and policy goals of the PBDC for the coming year. We need to hear your thoughts and feelings so don’t miss this meeting. Newcomers are always welcome! Members are encouraged to bring a snack to share.

Featured speakers:  Lori Saldaña and Ken Malbrough, candidates for the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, Fourth District.

 

Lori Saldaña served in the California Assembly from 2004-2010, serving as Speaker Pro tempore, Chair of the Women’s Caucus, and Chair of the Housing/Community Development Committee. Before being elected she served as a Mayoral and Presidential appointee, working on water quality issues and binational infrastructure development.

From 1999-2003 she served as President Clinton’s appointee on the Border Environmental Cooperation Commission (BECC), which has invested billions in water, air quality and transportation infrastructure along the US-Mexico border.
She earned her BA and MA from SDSU and is currently a Professor of Business Information Technology for the San Diego Community College District, where she has managed US Department of Labor grants to develop technical/vocational programs for low-income students.
Lori has also taught at the University of California San Diego, and San Diego State University. She was a Dean of Service Learning at San Diego Mesa College, and a Research Fellow in Environmental Policy at the UCSD Center for US-Mexico Studies. Her article- “From Litigation to Legislation: Challenges to Binational Water Infrastructure Development in the San Diego-Tijuana Border Region” – was published in the Journal of Environment and Development.

She is a native San Diegan who grew up in Clairemont, in a Marine Corps family.

Ken Malbrough is a proud life long San Diego native. He is a retired Deputy Fire Chief for the City of San Diego Fire-Rescue Department with 31 years of experience (retiring in 2012),

Ken has been committed to serving his city and local community throughout his life. He currently serves as a Delegate for the 79th State Assembly District, as Co-Chair for the City of San Diego Consolidated Pan Advisory Board, Chair-Person of The Encanto Neighborhoods Community Planning Group and is the Chair for the O’Farrell-Valencia Park Town Council. Ken is also active in civic engagement and outreach in community organizations and the Democratic Party.

Ken has been married to his high school sweetheart Deborah for 40 years. They have two children and a granddaughter.

Annual Pick Nick/BBQ – Potluck

Come one come all to the Pacific Beach Democratic Club annual pick nick, It is fun for the whole family, so bring your kids, bring your dogs, bring your loved ones. This is a fun social event where us likeminded people can let loose from the day to day frustrations and hang out amongst friends. It is a potluck, so please be mindful and bring something to share.

It will Be August 13th from 1pm to 3pm at Kate Sessions Park on the north side (close to the playground)
